Washington Park Memorial

     Debate Site Redevelopment

The Quincy City Council and Quincy Park Board have approved a plan to enhance the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Site in Washington Park. Improvements are targeted for completion by June 2008, which will make the site ready for debate anniversary activities.

The Improvements

  1. Concrete blocks and planter in front of the Laredo Taft bas relief will be replaced by a new concrete plaza with an engraved 1858 map of the United States.
  2. A low limestone wall will flank the monument to provide a surface for interpretive markers. Sloping granite tabliets will accommodate six pairs of “Point-Counterpoint” quotations Lincoln and Douglas made during the debate.
  3. A raised limestone base will be added to the existing monument bearing information about the monument’s history and sculptor.
  4. Flag poles and area lighting will be added.
  5. Two Looking for Lincoln storyboards will be installed at the sidewalk to provide historical context of the debate and teh City of Quincy.
